That was Glaucon’s challenge in Plato’s Republic. Give anyone the Ring of Gyges—invisibility, freedom from accountability—and watch justice disappear. His argument? We act justly only when someone is watching.

Socrates disagreed. Justice isn’t the fear of getting caught. It’s the proper ordering of the soul—an intrinsic good, not a reward.

But instead of resolving this, we built Glaucon’s world. We engineered systems that reward invisibility: complex markets that anonymise harm, corporations that insulate leaders from consequence, financial tools that make accountability vanish in abstraction. In a world designed for unaccountability, caring itself becomes structurally impossible—not because leaders lack virtue, but because architecture rewards its absence.

This is what the Enlightenment missed. Kant’s “moral law within” wagered that reason alone could guide us, cut loose from the “starry heavens above”. But autonomy without a shared good leaves us isolated, fragile wills maximizing private gain while collective possibility withers.

Justice isn’t procedural compliance or box-ticking. It’s what Socrates saw: the architecture of a well-ordered whole, where each part finds its meaning in service to the common good. Flourishing isn’t the tally of private victories. It’s participation in something greater—the radiant unfolding of human possibility through systems built for the good.

To lead is to answer freedom for, not just freedom from—and to build institutions where care and accountability are baked into the structure, not heroic exception. Where justice aligns individual commitment and the architecture itself.

The Ring is real. The test remains: when no one’s watching, do we still care?
