That was Glaucon’s challenge in Plato’s Republic. Give anyone the Ring of Gyges—invisibility and freedom from accountability—and you will watch justice disappear. His argument? We act justly only when someone is watching.

Socrates disagreed. Justice isn’t the fear of getting caught. It’s the proper ordering of the soul—an intrinsic good, not a reward.

But instead of heeding his insights, we built Glaucon’s world. We engineered systems that reward invisibility: complex markets that anonymise harm, corporations that insulate leaders from consequence, financial tools that make accountability vanish in abstraction. In a world designed for unaccountability, caring itself becomes structurally impossible—not because leaders lack virtue, but because architecture rewards its absence.

This is what the Enlightenment missed: Kant’s “moral law within” wagered that reason alone could guide us, cut loose from the “starry heavens above”. But autonomy without a shared good leaves us isolated, with our fragile wills continually maximizing private gain while collective possibility quietly withers.

The deeper problem is that justice isn’t procedural fairness or compliance box-ticking. It’s precisely what Socrates pointed toward: the architecture of a well-ordered whole, where each part gains its meaning in service to a higher good. Flourishing isn’t the tally of private victories. It is participation in something greater—the radiant unfolding of human possibility through systems designed to actualise the best of human potential.

Genuine leaders must answer a “freedom for”, not merely a “freedom from”—and build institutions where care and accountability are baked into the very structure. Justice becomes an architectural practice of leadership: where the aim is to align individual virtue with the common good.

Today, the Ring of Gyges is real. The question is simple: when no one’s watching, do we still care?
