We can wriggle. We can whimper. We can stall, resist, patrol, and wring our hands at the specter of apocalypse. But none of it changes a simple, irreversible fact:

AI has quietly, radically, and permanently raised the bar in knowledge creation.

Not just in speed. Not just in productivity. Not only in fluency or polish. But in excellence itself—the very benchmark by which insights will now be judged.

We can comfort ourselves with tired binaries—“AI slop” versus “pure human brilliance”—but they will not save us. The monks who perfected calligraphy surely scoffed at Gutenberg. Their craft was real, their loss bitter, their grief valid. Yet their resistance was futile.

We are here again.

There’s plenty of noise, for sure. But already, AI-enabled human work is quietly surpassing the output of celebrated professionals. Not always. But often enough to change the game.

The printing press didn’t just accelerate reproduction. It challenged the authority of the Church, widened who could think, write, and be heard—and in doing so, transformed the standard of thought itself.

Unlike the press, AI does not merely multiply our words. But neither does it simply replace us. Properly used, AI acts more like a telescope or microscope: not seeing for us, but helping us see further. When used well (and only then), it spotlights what we’ve overlooked, exposes the parochialism of our “original” ideas, and pushes our imagination beyond its old limits. Here lies the deeper shift: the standard of what counts as good thinking - clear writing, rigorous synthesis, creative imagination—has moved higher. Students, researchers, writers, analysts: the danger is not that AI will replace all knowledge workers. But knowledge workers who wield AI well will replace those who refuse. And for good reason. And no, this isn’t about automating routine tasks, firing off ChatGPT emails, or abandoning our human wisdom.
