The good you serve is not a rule you possess, but a reality you participate in — approached, never owned.
Every just act is the universal made partly visible in the particular. To act well is to let that higher ideal guide you, here and now, in what only you can do.
But you do not judge from nowhere.
You are already claimed — by those who bore you, the wronged who summon you, the others through whom you become an "I" at all.
Selfhood is no premise but an achievement, it is rising into a wider whole that does not erase you but completes you. Spirit is this labour: to recognise myself in the other and the other in myself, and to be free not by escaping the bond but by owning it.
I am not first an “I” who then takes up duty.
In answering — in standing up for what should be in the relationships that constitute life — the “I” first comes to be.
Responsibility does not follow from my being; it founds it.
I am responsible. Therefore, I am.
