Five days before Hungary’s election, America’s Vice President takes the stage beside the Hungarian PM, tells voters to ignore “Brussels bureaucrats,” and declares: “We have got to get Viktor Orbán re-elected!”
A naked, unapologetic electoral interference by a senior US official, propping up a regime classified by V-DEM as rigged—the EU brands it “electoral autocracy” and the European Parliament says it is “no longer a full democracy.” Coming from a man who first called Trump “America’s Hitler,” then deleted the tweets, repackaged himself as MAGA royalty, converted to Catholicism, and rode Peter Thiel’s capital straight into the Senate.
James Donald Bowman—now rebranded JD Vance—is far more dangerous than a mere political opportunist. He wields a coherent authoritarian blueprint, fusing post-liberal Catholic integralism, Thielite techno-nationalism, and nationalist-conservative dogma. In this twisted gospel, liberal democracy—procedural neutrality and individual rights—is not just flawed but pathological. Legitimacy flows not from negative freedoms but from the state’s divine duty to impose a “thick,” specifically Christian vision of flourishing. That vision conveniently requires no institutional checks, no pluralism, no opposition. Orbán's Hungary is its most prominent proof of concept.
That proof has failed. Vance is campaigning alongside Russia for what political scientist Bálint Magyar calls a post-communist mafia state: a kleptocracy organized primarily around the extraction and redistribution of economic rents through patronage networks. Orbán’s so-called “Christian democracy” is not Aristotelian common-good governance; the incumbent spent 16 years methodically capturing courts, media, and electoral machinery to render electoral defeat near-impossible—while his foreign minister was caught on leaked audio pledging to Russia’s FM to “do our best” on sanctions. Christian rhetoric serves merely as pious camouflage for institutional plunder—now under relentless EU infringement proceedings.
Such inconsistencies seldom bother Vance. He accused "childless cat ladies" of ruining the US, Haitian immigrants for eating pets, and Europe for authoritarianism—even Pope Leo XIV rebuked Vance as “wrong” for invoking Catholic doctrine to sanctify mass deportations and the inhuman treatment of immigrants.
Yet, the most dangerous thing about the Vice President is not what he says. It is that he possesses the intellect to forge a sophisticated theoretical armour for authoritarian rule and the cold will to wield state power to dismantle all opposition infrastructure. Worse, at 41 he is positioned to outlast Trump by decades as the heir to a movement he once privately likened to Nazism—increasingly cloaked in public prayers and nationalist steel.
In that context, the $500M oil deal signed the same day was not diplomacy—it was an attempt to sabotage the election. Péter Magyar leads by 10 points—let’s hope that lead survives.
